In her interview to Zee News, Raheen appealed to the government of India to grant clemency to her husband Yakub Memon.
There is only a little hope left in Yakub Memon's case after his mercy plea as well as curative petition were rejected.
All I want to say is that Yakub had surrendered himself. Be it Yakub, me or our daughter, we have all already gone through a lot. I beg for clemency from the government of India.
Why did you decide to speak up now?
Because it's high time now, and (crying) no one will believe me if I call him innocent, so now all I am asking for is clemency. I appeal to the government of India to commute his death sentence into life.
The date of hanging is scheduled to be on July 30. When you met Yakub last in jail, what were his thoughts?
He was pretty shattered because he had very high hopes on the curative petition that was rejected on July 21. But he still asked me to relax and said he still has a lot of faith in the Indian judicial system as well as in the Governor, Chief Minister, Prime Minister and the President of India. He thinks he won't be hanged.
So he still has hope?
Yes. He is very positive about it. He is a nice man and I know nothing will happen to him. We have full faith on God and the Government of India.
Have you noticed any change in his behaviour over the years?
He is not keeping well. His health has been deteriorating day by day. He suffers from schizophrenia and is not physically or mentally fit.
Do you think he is being punished for the crimes Tiger Memon committed?
He is definitely being punished for the crimes others have committed. Yakub was heartbroken and shattered by the 1993 Mumbai blasts. He will never even think of harming someone, not even an animal, I know him well enough to say this.
Do you think the matter is being politicised?
I'm not aware of those things. Yakub's mother is very ill. I haven't been well either and we have a daughter who hasn't even spent a single day with him. I don't understand the technicalities of law. We are very common and ordinary people, just pardon Yakub and let us live in peace.
Yakub's daughter Zubeida said that she has not spent even a complete single day with her father. “When I met him, he told me to be calm in life and focus on education. He is a perfect gentleman and that is why I love, adore and respect him. He is innocent.”
