A letter exclusively accessed by Zee Media, reveals that Aligarh Muslim University does not have a minority status. A letter written by the National Commission for Minorities Education Commission told SC commission that AMU had not been given the status of a minority education institute. On July 6, the SC Commission had asked the minority educational institution to get the check the minority status of JMU and Jamia Milia Islamia University.

SC Commission Chairman Ram Shankar Katheria told Zee News that it was clear that AMU wasn’t a minority rating university. He said: “ In the last 10 years, the central government has funded AMU fund of nearly Rs 7,000 crore, in the year 2017-18 alone, grants worth Rs.1106 crore was given to the AMU. When the Minority Commission has said that AMU does not have a minority status then immediate reservation should be implemented.”

Earlier on July 3, BJP leader and Aligarh MP Satish Gautam demanded reservation for the students belonging to ST/SC/OBC in AMU.

He added that students from ST/SC/OBC backgrounds are deprived of good education despite having a college in Aligarh.

Earlier in 2016, the Central Government had approached the Supreme Court, stating the AMU does not enjoy minority status, and the matter is pending.

Attacking opposition parties for alleging discrimination against Dalits, Yogi Adityanath had called for reservation in AMU and Jamia Millia  Islamia.

"Those who are saying that Dalits are being discriminated against must be asked when will they raise the issue of reservation for Dalits in Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia University?" he asked.

"When BHU can provide reservation for Dalits and backward students, why not AMU?” the UP CM said at a function in Kannauj.

The AMU on Monday responded to Yogi and said, "Currently we don’t have reservation on the religious basis. 50% reservation is for internal students."

"AMU's admission policy falls under SC jurisdiction. The matter is pending before the SC. We will follow court's decision: Prof Shafey Kidwai, member in-charge of PRO AMU, said.
