It was a poetic start to the twelfth edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival on Thursday. British Poet and author Ruth Padel set the tone of the festival on Day 1 with her beautiful rendition of poems on nature and on the Pink City.

Padel, who is the great-great grandchild of Charles Darwin, is known for her works on nature conservation and science. She joined the list of celebrated authors like Amartya Sen and iconic leaders like Dalai Lama who have preceded her in delivering the keynote address at the Jaipur Literature Festival venue.

She read out a poem on Pink City first, while her second poem, which she chose to describe as “a little hymn to blue-green algae,” was a contemplation on the genetics of the cell and how it first got here. He address was followed by the keynote address of Nobel Laureate Venki Ramakrishnan.

Earlier in the morning, before the start of the sessions, the ones who had come early took seats at the Front Lawn and enjoyed musical performances. They braved the chilly Jaipur morning on Thursday and while they sipped on hot kullhad tea, were welcomed by the melodious voice of singer Shruti Vishwanath.

Accompanied by musicians Yuji Nakagawa on the sarangi and Shruteendra Katagadeon the tabla, Vishwanath had the attention of the audience with her very first rendition.

She is among the several female performers who would be opening the sessions every day at the festival venue with their performance at the Morning Music session. Hers was a musical rendition of the words of 17th century spiritual poet Tukaram. Apart from other songs, she sang the famous bhajan  Vaishnava Jana much to the appreciation of the audience that had perched itself on the lawns to book their seat for the keynote addresses.
