The defection dispute between YSR Congress and TRS in Telangana has now reached the Privilege Committee, with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan referring a notice to disqualify Lok Sabha MP P Srinivasa Reddy to the panel headed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.

In May 2016, Reddy, an MP from Khammam Parliamentary seat had quit YSR Congress and joined Telangana Rashtra Samiti, saying he wanted to support the "good" work done by the K Chandrasekhar Rao''s party, which is the ruling party in Telangana.

Reddy, who was the president of YSR Congress in Telangana, joined TRS along with the last remaining MLA of the party. By then, two other YSR Congress legislators had already switched side.

The defection by Reddy was a big blow to the Jaganmohan Reddy-led YSR Congress, which earlier lost a number of its legislators to N Chandrababu Naidu's ruling Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh.

A week ago, Jagan's party sought intervention of President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking disqualification of its 21 legislators, who defected to TDP. The matter is also being heard in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Leader of YSRC in the Lower House Mekapati Raja Mohan Reddy had submitted a petition before Mahajan, seeking action against Srinivasa Reddy under the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India and rule 6 of the Members of Lok Sabha (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1985.

As per the law, the Speaker can disqualify a member belonging to any political party if he or she votes or abstains from voting in the House contrary to any direction issued by such political party or by any person or authority authorised by it in this behalf.

The Speaker on November 3 referred the matter to the Privilege Committee of the Lower House under rule 7(4) of the Members of Lok Sabha Rules, 1985 for making a preliminary enquiry and submitting a report to her.

The YSR Congress party had ceased to exist in Telangana after all its three MLAs and the lone MP joined the TRS last year.
