32-year-old financial analyst Ranee Karunakaran has called off her New Year party plans and said that such an incident proves that there is truly nothing to look forward to in the coming year. “Though barbaric, this isn’t the first gang-rape incident and if we don’t change our attitude, it wouldn’t be the last. While it’s fine to come out on streets and curse the government and police since it’s their responsibility to protect us, are we thinking about our duties? It’s high time we rose above selfish motives like having lavish New Year parties and instead focus our attention on the bigger problem at hand. I don’t feel like partying after a woman died of such brutality,” she said.
MBBS student Vidya Nair, 22, said that her entire family has cancelled their New Year plans. “What are we celebrating for? A woman can’t step out after 9pm in her country without feeling that she wont get raped, so what’s the guarantee that this New Year’s eve, when hundreds of women would be out on streets they won’t get raped or eve-teased?” she said.
Women in Mumbai also cited safety as a major concern. “Though this gory incident occurred in Delhi which has repeatedly been termed as an unsafe city for women, I don’t feel my city (Mumbai) is safe enough,” said Madhura Lingayat, a photographer.
Even men echoed the same sentiments. Abdullah Popere, a third year business student said, “When a famous politician dies, a whole city is shut down as a mark of respect. If all the protests we did for this girl are genuine, than the least we can do is to cancel or tone down our celebrations for New Year’s eve,” he said.
Tanmay Kanitkar, 24, who has founded Parivartan, a youth organisation, said that he would spend the day at home. “To party or not is an individual’s decision but I feel that after such barbarism, many young people may not feel it’s safe as well,” he said.
