Ten months after the rape and murder of eight-year-old tribal nomad girl shook the nation, the case has taken a new turn after the parents of the victim removed Deepika Singh Rajawat as advocate on record in the trial court at Pathankot in Punjab.

Deepika Singh Rajawat, the Jammu-based lawyer who hit headlines as the advocate standing up for the Kathua rape and murder victim, earning praise from around the globe, has been removed from the job by the victim’s father.

The complainant’s father moved an application in court seeking Rajawat’s removal and the court agreed.  Rajawat had moved Supreme Court to get the case shifted from Kathua to Pathankot.

In his application, counsel Mubeen Farooqi, representing the victim’s father, claimed that since the two Special Public Prosecutors were doing an ‘effective jobs’ they seek the removal of power of attorney of Deepika Singh Rajawat.

Reacting, Deepika Singh Rajawat wrote on Twitter: “I was there with them when no one was. Now since the rainy days have passed, they are winding up with me just because I could not regularly attend the trial which is taken care of by senior criminal lawyers. I don't blame them. it is the human tendency which travels in genes.”

This led Omar Abdullah, the former Jammu and Kashmir CM to reiterate: "You had me on your side until you slipped in the snide remark about the genes."

Under fire, Rajawat posted a video on the social media to put across her point of view after the new development. “I have again started getting trolled. I have again started being abused and questioned. I have again started receiving calls. I just try to put my heart out though I do not need certificate from anyone,” she said.

Rajawat noted that the trial is going on peacefully and the case is in safe hands. “Since I saw trial going on peacefully and lawyers are doing fantastic, I felt that I need to rest so that I can take care of my work in Jammu.  I did not change any fee from them (Kathua victim family). I have long list of cases in Jammu. It is very important to appear in these cases too. Going to Pathankot every day is impossible it is almost 150 km”, she said.

Body of eight-year-old tribal nomad Bakarwal girl was found in a village of the Kathua district on January 17, a week after she went missing near her home.  From being drugged to being gang raped in a revered religious place, the bone chilling crime had all the wicked traits of lust, hatred and revenge.

Crime Branch had filed a charge sheet against eight people including Sanjhi Ram, a retired revenue official and the alleged mastermind of the crime, his son Vishal Jangotra and his nephew who is a juvenile. Other accused include Parvesh Kumar alias Mannu, Special Police Officers (SPOs) Deepak Kumar Khajuria alias Deepu and Surinder Kumar, Sub Inspector of Hiranangar police station Anand Dutta and head constable Tilak Raj.
