Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday passed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, 2017 in UP Assembly unanimously with voice vote to pave the way for its implementation from July 1, 2017.
Uttar Pradesh has become the ninth state in the country to have passed the bill.
Holding debate on the Bill, the Opposition gave its consent with a few amendments. The Chief Minister allayed the fears of members, clarifying that the Central Committee on GST will sit soon to take a decision on all suggestions and recommendations.
Speaking on the benefits of the GST, Adityanath said it was a landmark decision towards creating a congenial and cohesive atmosphere for the business community for an integrated economic growth of the country.
The Bill was also passed in the Upper House of the State Legislature. Unlike UP Assembly, the Adityanath government does not have majority in the UP Council. After ensuring safe passage to the Bill in UP Assembly, CM Adityanath rushed to UP Council to ensure that the Bill gets the approval of the Upper House also.
Earlier, agitated Opposition members staged a walkout from the Assembly when Speaker HN Dixit rejected their adjournment notice to take up law and order issue before any other agenda was taken up.
Leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary alleged that riots, murder, loot have become day of the order under Adityanath government. Though allegations were countered by the treasury benches, pandemonium prevailed in the House forcing the CM to intervene.
"Some recent incidents are unfortunate, but we have issued directions to the DGP to deal firmly with criminal elements. My government will maintain zero tolerance policy on law and order related issues and no one will be spared for taking law into their hands," said Adityanath while pointing a finger towards Samajwadi Party without taking its name over recent criminal incidents.
Speaking on Saharanpur riots, Adityanath said that role of a local MLA of a particular political party and activities of an outfit are under the scanner of the security agencies. "My government will not tolerate any political patronage to criminal elements," he assured the House.
