Even as a row over installation of a statue of Lord Lakshman outside Lucknow's famous Teele Wali Masjid is yet to die down, the Yogi Adityanath government has announced a plan to introduce a dress code for Muslim students studying in madrasas across Uttar Pradesh.

During a function at the Haj House in Lucknow, Mohsin Raza, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, said that new dress code would be applicable in all madrasas across the state after implementation of NCERT syllabus in the minority institutions. He said that it was an attempt to bring Muslim students to mainstream education.

“The students come to madrasas in kurta-pyajama or in salwar-kameej. We are formulating a dress code to introduce a uniform which should look decent and no one should have any objection on it,” said the Minister.

Clearly, the move is aimed at doing away with traditional dresses of Muslim children at madrasas. He, however, did not make it clear that the skull cap and Hijab will also be withdrawn in the name of the new dress code.

The minister said that a discussion is on in this regard and the new dress code would be implemented only after taking opinion of parents, Madrasa Education and management of madrasas across the state.

Raza claimed that the Yogi government has taken a number of steps to improve the quality of education and modernisation of madrasas by introducing NCERT syllabus. Besides Urdu and religious teachings, Muslim children will now learn about other subjects, including computer science, English, Mathematics etc to shape up their careers, he added.

He claimed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the biggest secular and pro-Muslim leader in the country. “He keeps a beard and that’s the biggest proof that he is one of the biggest sympathizers of Musim community in the country,’ he pointed.

Earlier, the Yogi Adityanath government had tightened its noose around fake madrasas siphoning off government grants by making mandatory for over 14,000 institutions to register themselves with the UP Madarsa Board and furnish all details about students, teachers and staff on its website.

“Our efforts are aimed at modernizing madarsa to impart career-oriented education to its students who lag behind students of government and private schools,” stated Dr Dinesh Sharma, State Education Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.
