Startled by the BSP-SP alliance and its humiliating defeat in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha by-polls, the BJP is now making frantic efforts to wean away non-Jatavs among Dalits and most backward castes (MBCs) among backward to checkmate the opposition alliance ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

After announcing quota within quota for most backward Dalits and MBCs, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to introduce chapters on non-Jatav Dalit icons in school curriculum to please Pasi community, which is second largest after Jatavs in the Dalit community.

In a function organized in Lucknow on Maharaja Bijli Pasi, The Chief Minister announced to include chapters in history textbooks on Maharaj Bijli Pasim Lakhan Pasi, Raja Ganga Bux Rawat, and Uda Devi. “The future generations should know about the contributions made by the icons from the Pasi community,” said Yogi Adityanath.

The move is mainly aimed at making inroads into non-Jatavs votes from BSP’s Dalit vote-bank. Pasi community feels neglected under Mayawati as the BSP Supremo gives more importance to Jatav community to which she belongs to. Since Pasis are second largest to Jatavs among Dalit population in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP’s game-plan is to woo them into the party fold.

Taking a dig at BSP Supremo Mayawati without taking her name, the Chief Minister said that people of the country will not forgive those who could not preserve the history of their community icons. “Those who could not preserve the history of their icons will never safeguard the interest of their community members. My government will do justice to the forgotten Dalit icons to make their caste aware of their contributions to the political, social, cultural and economic history of the country,” said he.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister announced to renovate Maharaja Bijli Pasi Qila in Lucknow and organize several programs every year to commemorate his birth anniversary. He also declared to name one of the Metro Station in the name of Maharaja Bijil Pasi.

The move comes close on the Yogi Adityanath’s decision to insert ‘Ramji’ in the name of Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambdekar much to the discomfiture of BSP Supremo Mayawati. She alleged that the BJP’s ‘political drama’ was aimed at weaning away her Dalit vote-bank.

Earlier, the Yogi Adityanath government had announced to introduce quota within quota in government job reservations. The decision was aimed at restricting Jatavs and Yadavs eating away the big pie from the quota of reservations fixed for the SC/ST and OBCs.

The Chief Minister has set-up a committee to fix quota for most backward Dalits and MBCs by dividing the 21 percent quota for SC/ST and 27 percent for OBCs as per their population so that these sub-castes also enjoy the reservations benefits. It will certainly intensify caste war within the SC/ST and OBCs to the political benefits of the BJP.
