Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday attacked Bihar's ruling Mahagathbandhan, calling it a mismatched wedding between Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and RJD President Lalu Prasad Yadav, and claimed that the BJP will overthrow the grand alliance with a thumping victory in the 2020 state Assembly polls.

"When I look at Nitish and Lalu, I think, kehu Rahim kaise nibhe, ber-ker ke sang (how will jujube and banana stay together)… nature will not tolerate it," said Adityanath, while addressing a public gathering in Bihar's Darbhanga district (Mithilanchal) as part of celebrations of the Narendra Modi government completing three years at the Centre.

Hitting back at Kumar, who on Wednesday had asked the UP CM not to come 'empty-handed' to Bihar, Adityanath said, "We downed the shutters of all illegal slaughterhouses in UP within 24 hours of coming into power. We have made anti-Romeo squads to protect women. Can the Bihar government do it?" He asked why Kumar and other "secular" leaders were silent on the issue of triple talaq.

Emphasising his emotional relationship with Mithilanchal, Adityanath said, "I have come from Awadh, the land of Lord Ram, and this is the birthplace of Ma Janki. The relationship between the two dates back to over hundreds of years… East UP is virtually Bihar part two. We have to re-establish the emotional connect," he said and added that he will tour every district of Bihar by 2020.

He also announced the construction of 'Ram-Janki Marg', a four-lane road connecting Ayodhya in UP and Sitamarhi in Bihar. "Once the project is complete, it will take half the time to travel between the two cities," he said.

Touching upon the Ram temple-Babri Masjid issue, he added, "You all should rest assured about Ayodhya dhaam… Aapki jo bhavnae hai, uske anurup hi kaam hoga waha (Work will proceed there according to how you think)."

Strict security measures were put in place for the much-hyped public meeting, with a special bullet-proof glass podium made for Adityanath. This was perhaps the first bullet-proof podium built in Bihar's recent history, as well as for the UP CM.

Analysis

BJP will make an aggresive push in Bihar in 2020, since it’s one of the few places the party is yet to conquer.
With Yogi’s visit, the BJP aims to rattle the ruling alliance in the state.
But Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who retains goodwill among the people, will prove to be a tough opponent.
