After last year's row over his 'I am devout Hindu and don't celebrate festivals like Eid' comment, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has set off yet another controversy this year by banning Bakr Eid observation in public. To that end, he has directed that sacrifices of animals can't be made in public and ordered law enforcement agencies to ensure that blood and offal are not released in open drains. He insisted that it was so religious feelings of other communities are not hurt.

"Bakr Eid can be celebrated in the traditional way, but sacrifices of animals should not be done in either public or areas with mixed population. It should be ensured that the offal and blood are not thrown in open drains to avoid any tension," the Chief Minister directed district magistrates and police chiefs across state through video-conferencing.

While spelling out the dos and dont's to law enforcement agencies, Adityanath also issued strict orders to police officials to ensure that protected animals — particularly cows — are not sacrificed or slaughtered on Bakr Eid.

At one or two places in Uttar Pradesh, camels and other bigger animals are sacrificed on Bakr Eid to meet the high demand of meat. Also, since many of the cities in the state do not have designated slaughter houses, animals are usually sacrificed in open.

Additionally, the CM has also directed that a vigil be kept in sensitive areas, particularly on the 'Kanwar Yatra' route, to maintain law and order. He has also issued instructions to ensure uninterrupted power and water supply on Wednesday across state so that Muslim brethren celebrate the festival with religious fervor.
