Amidst the ongoing debate, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Monday equated triple talaq to disrobing of Draupadi in the Mahabharata and called for an end of the Muslim practice. CM Adityanath recommended the implementation of a common civil code.

He said the politicians maintaining silence on the issue were equally responsible as those practising it. "These days there is a new debate in the country. Some people are maintaining a silence on this issue. This reminds me of the scene in the Mahabharata in which Draupadi is being disrobed in an assembly and she asks a question to the gathering as to who is responsible for this?" he said.

"...no one was able to utter even a single word. At that time Vidur said people who have committed the crime, those who are the accomplices and those who maintained silence on this issue are equally responsible," Adityanath said, referring to the practice of 'triple talaq'.

He made these remarks at an event to mark the 91st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar.

Earlier on Monday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plea for a complete ban on triple talaq echoed sentiments of lakh of Muslim women, who have been running from pillar to post seeking justice and an end to the menace. "Triple talaq has been done away with Islamic countries as well. When our Prime Minister talks about equality for women and ensuring that every women is given respect in marriage, it is not a sentiment which is echoed only by him. Lakh of Muslim women in India have registered the case in courts asking for dignity," BJP leader Shaina NC told ANI.

"And I am glad that our Prime Minister has had the political will to take this decision to a logical conclusion, because in the 21st century no woman is a commodity to be told talaq thrice and finish off her life," she added.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi had said that justice should be given to Muslim women by eradicating the practise of triple talaq in the country. "Our Muslim sisters deserve justice. We should try to solve this issue at the district level. We should also proceed on the formula of a new India. We can't simply move forward on a slow pace, but charge ahead with full speed," he said during the BJP National Executive Meeting in Bhubaneshwar. During a discussion on the National Commission for Backward Classes, he also suggested that the party should hold conferences for 'backward Muslims'.

A five-judge constitution bench of the apex court will start hearing the petitions against triple talaq from May 11.
