Yogi Adityanath Cabinet effects major changes into PCS main examinations

Even as a CBI inquiry is on into irregularities in the result of the PCS examinations held between 2012 and 2017, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has effected major changes in the evaluation system of PCS main examinations, cutting interview marks to half, and introducing more written papers for the general knowledge (GK) instead of objective type.

A decision to this effect was taken by the Yogi Adityanath Cabinet on Tuesday. As per the Cabinet decision, total marks for written and interview have now been brought down to 1600 instead of 1700 by reducing marks obtained in the interview from 200 to 100.

The Cabinet has also approved the proposal to introduce two more papers for the GK with 200 marks each. Now there will be a total of four GK papers of 200 marks each. Instead of objective type, as was the case earlier, the candidates will have to answer them in writing.

After the changes, the candidates will have to opt only one subject instead of two earlier. There will be two papers for the optional subject of 200 marks each. More new subjects, including the medical education, have been introduced for choosing optional subjects for the PCS main examinations.

There will be, however, no change in the marks for the compulsory Hindi and Essay papers with 150 marks each.

“The new evaluation system of PCS main exams has been introduced to bring in transparency, quality, competitiveness and provide level playing field to all candidates,” said Dr Sidharth Nath Singh, the state government Spokesperson.

Ironically, the same proposal was sent to the previous Akhilesh Yadav government in 2016 to effect changes in the evaluation system after a Central government 2013 directive but the same was rejected.

The Yadav government was charged with glaring irregularities in PCS main results when candidates of a particular caste were selected in PCS. On Complaints, the Yogi government had ordered a CBI probe to look into the charges.

The CBI had seized all document, examination copies relating to PCS results announced 2013 onwards to begin the probe. Recently, it had quizzed several UP Public service Commission officials and successful candidates, including toppers.
