Yahoo lays off 400 employees in Bangalore as it downsizes India operations

At least 400 employees from the Yahoo Software Development Centre in Bangalore have been laid off by Yahoo Inc. SDC being Yahoo's research and development wing in India has been down sized with the view to reduce operation costs and encourage new avenues of growth for the company. 

A press statement issued by Yahoo said, "As we ensure that Yahoo is on a path of sustainable growth, we’re looking at ways to achieve greater efficiency, collaboration and innovation across our business. To this effect, we're making some changes to the way we operate in Bangalore leading to consolidation of certain teams into fewer offices."

A prominent business news website reported that although most employees have been asked to leave some have been offered to relocate to Yahoo's Sunnyvale campus in California, USA.

Marissa Mayer widely believed to be the hand behind Google's user experience, joined as the CEO of Yahoo in July 2012. Yahoo Inc. Since then has seen several major changes. For one, as expected, changes have been made in the user experience of Yahoo products. However Yahoo simultaneously announced downsizing even as it continued to acquire several smaller firms across the globe like summly.com, lexity.com and 34 others, including Bangalore-based online document editing software creater BookPad. 

An official spokesperson for Yahoo India said, “Yahoo will continue to have a presence in India and Bangalore remains an important office."
