In Modi Wave, the BJP has made a stormy entry with a landslide victory in Jodhpur, a desert district in the Marwar region. Except CM Ashok Gehlot, who contested elections from Sardarpura constituency, none of the Congress s could win in the remaining nine constituencies in district.

Gehlot retained his Sardarpura seat beating Shambhu Singh Khetasar of the BJP and marked his fourth consecutive victory since 1999 by-elections. It was not only of Congress, but the fate of the legendary families viz. Paras Ram Maderna and Ram Singh Bishnoi, was also to be decided in these elections and surprisingly voters marginalised the political standing of both families.

Following the imprisonment of Mahipal Maderna, son of Congress stalwart Late Paras Ram Maderna and Malkhan Singh Bishnoi, son of another Congress biggie Late Ram Singh Bishnoi, Congress had given tickets to Leela Maderna (wife of Mahipal) from Osian and Amri Devi (Malkhan’s mother) from Luni hoping to encash the sympathy of the particular castes with these families.

In Luni, BJP’s Jogaram Patel registered a convincing victory over Amri Devi with a big margin of 35,940 votes. Likewise, Leela Maderna lost to a new face from BJP Bhera Ram Siol by 15,396 votes and failed to retain the legacy of her family.

Suryakanta Vyas from Soorsagar and Kailash Bhansali from Jodhpur City, both sitting MLAs of the BJP, retained the seats by a good margin. Similarly, the sitting MLAs of BJP Gajendra Singh Khinwsar (Lohawat), Babu Singh (Shergarh), Arjunlal Garg (Bilara) and Kamsa Meghwal (Bhopalgarh) also succeeded in retaining their respective seats. Garg at Bilara beat Heera Ram Meghwal of Congress.

In last elections, the Congress had wrested four out of these 10 seats, but in these elections the BJP kept his tally up consistently on seven seats without allowing Congress to be in competition.
In entire Marwar reason, the Congress could only secure three seats out of 33 constituencies of six districts including Jodhpur, Pali, Sirohi, Jalore, Barmer and Jaisalmer.
