Eman Ahmed, 36, who is touted to be the world's heaviest woman left Alexandria in Egypt on Friday accompanied by a team of doctors and her sister Shaimaa Ahmed. She will be taken to Saifee hospital in South Mumbai in a truck where Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, a leading bariatric surgeon and his team of doctors will operate on her.

Eman has not left her home for the past 25 years. Dr Lakdawala and his team have been treating Eman for around three months now. Arrangements for her transportation was made keeping her delicate health condition in mind.

On Friday Eman boarded the Egypt Air aircraft which has been furnished with all the equipment required in case of an emergency such as a portable ventilator, portable defibrillator, oxygen cylinders, intubating laryngoscopes and other safety drugs. She was carried in a special bed made by local Egyptian artisans keeping in with the safety precautions as laid out by the Egypt air.

Her condition is being watched by Dr Aparna Govil Bhasker, Head of Department of Bariatric surgery at Saifee hospital and Dr Kamlesh Bohra, Senior Intensivist, Department of Critical & Intensive Care. The doctors have been in Egypt for the past 10 days to monitor her condition.

Earlier Eman Ahmed was granted visa after Sushma Swaraj's intervention. She had tweeted, " "Thanks for bringing this to my notice. We will definitely help her,"  after Dr Lakdawala reached out to External Affairs Minister on Twitter.

Eman is at a high-risk for a pulmonary embolism, a condition in which the arteries of the lungs become blocked due to a blood clot. She has been put on blood thinners to minimise the chances of such an eventuality during her transfer. Once in India Eman will be transported by a fully equipped truck, which will be followed by an ambulance and a police escort to Saifee Hospital where a special room has been created for her.

“There is always a risk involved when transporting a patient like Eman, who weighs about 500kgs. We have taken all the precautions possible to ensure that Eman’s journey to India is accomplished without incident. Special arrangements have been made for her ground and air transport in India and in Egypt,” said Dr Lakdawala who even ran a fund-raising campaign to raise Rs 50 lakh, the estimated cost of surgery.

Eman currently suffers from severe lymphedema and water retention. She has already suffered a stroke resulting in paralysis of her right arm and leg, she cannot speak coherently, has type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, has severe obstructive and restrictive lung disease, gout.
