World's biggest election ends, all eyes on May 23

The Lok Sabha polls concluded in 542 parliamentary constituencies across states and union territories on Sunday. There were incidents of violence in West Bengal and in Punjab reported during the seventh and last phase of election. Now all eyes are set on May 23 for results of the marathon polls that had been held in a seven phases from April 11 to May 19.

The Election Commission stated that in the last phase, 7.27 crore voters took part of which 3.47 crore were women and 3,377 were persons of third gender. A total 61.13 per cent voter turnout was recorded amid incidents of violence reported from West Bengal, where bombs were hurled and the TMC and BJP workers clashed. A Congress activist was killed in Punjab.

West Bengal recorded the highest voter turnout (73.40 per cent) and Bihar the lowest (53.36 percent). The last phase will decide the fate of 918 candidates including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There were electronic voting machines glitches and poll boycott at some booths.

In the first six phases of polls, voter turnout was recorded around 66%. The polls that began April 11 remained largely peaceful, except in West Bengal where incidents of violence were reported in large number. There was also a standoff between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state's chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

In the sixth phase of polls, a turnout of 63.3% was witnessed. The election was held for eight seats in Bihar, all 10 seats in Haryana and all seven in Delhi, four in Jharkhand, eight in Madhya Pradesh, 14 in Uttar Pradesh and eight in West Bengal. In the fifth phase 63.5% turnout was recorded. Voter turnout in the fourth phase held on April 29 stood at 65.51%, according to data released by the EC.

In third phase, a high voter turnout including over 80% in Assam, was recorded covering 116 constituencies amid complaints of EVM malfunctioning in many states and killing of a man outside a booth in West Bengal. The voting was recorded at 66%.

The second phase of elections in 95 constituencies registered a voter turnout of 67.6% across 11 states and union territory. The first phase was held on April 11 and saw a voter turnout of over 69%.
