World Marathon held in Gurgaon manages to raise whopping 4.2 million Euros

The event also kicked off in 35 other countries at the same time.

Enthusiasts from all walks of life participated in The Wings For Life World Run organized to raise funds for the spinal cord injury on Sunday at Tau Devi Lal stadium in Gurgaon. The 2nd edition of Wings For Life Run saw more than 1000 participants. The event also kicked off in 35 other countries at the same time.

Bollywood actor and local ambassador Ayushmann Khurrana flagged off the marathon.

Star athletes and celebrities who graced the event include chess player Tania Sachdev, Ace Badminton player Ashwini Ponaappa, off road racer CS Santosh, boulderer Tuhin Satarkar and India's first blade runner Major DP Singh. Boxers Vijender Singh and Akhil Kumar, Captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey team Mamta Kharab and President, Haryana Olympic Association Param Vir Rathee were also present to cheer the runners.

CEO of Wings for Life Foundation, Anita Gerhardter said, “It was a great day for Wings for Life and a great day for spinal cord research with 4.2 million Euros raised and donations still coming in.”

“It exceeded all my expectations. There were so many thrilling, touching moments during the event but my personal highlight was the Swedish wheelchair competitor Aron Anderson,” she added

The 90 km long marathon has no finish line. Instead, the runners are followed by a Catcher Car, which takes off 30 minutes after the start at 15km/h and steadily increases its speed until the last athletes is selected. The Catcher Car driven by badminton champion Ashwini Ponnappa crossed Kenya’s Linah Chirchir at 44.8 kilometers, making her the winner in the female category.

“The run was difficult and exhilarating at the same time. I started running slowly but steadily... I’m so glad with how far I got,” said Chirchir. India’s Radhey Kumar was declared the male winner as the Catcher Car drove past him at 55.2 kilometer.
