In the wake of the Delhi gang-rape incident, top cops of Gujarat have decided to form a separate squad to help women. In the coming days, a squad will be formed to provide safety and security to all girls and women of Gandhinagar, Mehsana and Sabarkantha districts.

During a meeting on Thursday, Shamsher Singh, Range IG of Gandhinagar, Mehsana and Sabarkantha, mooted the idea of a separate squad for women’s security, and directed the respective Superintendent of Police (SP) of these districts to start the process of formation of the team.

In the first phase, major towns and cities of these districts will be covered. “We will first identify vulnerable pockets in these cities and towns, such as Gandhinagar and Himmatnagar, where eve-teasing or sexual harassment is rampant. Our police will contact authorities and female students of schools, colleges, offices and tuition classes to make a comprehensive list of such pockets which require special attention,” stated Singh.

Subsequently, each town and city will have its own squad, comprising female police personnel, who will be armed with pistols or revolvers. To create fear among eve-teasers and road romeos, these squads will patrol all the identified spots.

“Gandhinagar has many places where female students or employees need protection, such as Infocity, NID, NIFT and other educational institutes. Our women squad will remain in live contact with heads of these institutes and reach the spot after receiving any complaint,” the police officer said.

Each of these squads will patrol, on two motorcycles and one police van, all the vulnerable areas in the city. Apart from phone number 100, women can reach the squad through mobile numbers.

“Mobile numbers of our female cops will be circulated among these institutes and offices. Girls can talk to the female cops by directly dialing their number. We are also planning to set up boxes, where women can drop their complaints without revealing their identity,” he explained.

Apart from providing security, these female cops will conduct awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to boost confidence among girls to take up the issue of harassment without any fear.

“We will guide them about their rights. We will make them aware about what can turn out to be dangerous for them. Our focus will be on making them fearless,” the officer added.
