In a tragic incident, a 57-year old woman from Chembur succumbed to her injuries on Saturday after a palm tree came crashing down on her on Thursday morning. Doctors from Sushrut Hospital in Chembur (E), where Kanchan Nath was admitted, say she suffered a hypoxic brain injury and was on ventilator but succumbed on Saturday morning. She is the second person to be killed by a falling tree this monsoon.

In 2017, within just one month, the civic body has already received 822 complaints of trees or their branches falling, with the maximum of 425 complaints coming from the western suburbs. Complaints have been received from both private as well as public places.

On February 17, Chandra Uday society in Chembur East — where the palm tree that fell on Nath was — had submitted a written complaint to the disaster management cell of the M-West ward office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), stating that the tree was bending. Residents say the society had also deposited a fee of Rs 1,380 towards tree trimming and the balancing that was required. "A team from BMC visited the site, trimmed some branches and plucked coconuts to bring down the weight of the tree," says a resident. The civic official assured them that there would be no problems now.

Harshad Kale, assistant municipal commissioner of M-West ward, says the tree snapped due to strong winds and heavy rainfall experienced the night before the incident. He said he regretted the incident, and has already written to BMC's Gardens Department regarding the matter. "There is a provision of compensation if a tree in a public place falls and someone is injured or dies. The final decision is taken by the Garden department and higher authority," he said. Local corporator, BJP's Aasha Marathe, has written to Kale and sought action against the officials responsible.

According to Chembur police station, where an accidental death report has been registered, the incident took place at around 8 am on Thursday, when Nath was walking on the road outside the society. "The tree snapped from the middle, and fell on the woman," said an officer said.

Nath lived in the nearby Prabasi Society. She was on her routine morning walk near the Swastik Park in Chembur, when the tree fell on her. Passers-by rushed her to Sushrut Hospital, where she was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.
