A 21-year-old aspiring air hostess died during treatment on Thursday, a day after a man stabbed her eight times at a busy market in Delhi's Shahdara area as scores of people looked on but did not come forward to save her.

The attacker left Riya Gautam alias Charu for dead and fled with the weapon. The police, which has not been to arrest the killer, said the two had known each other for a few years.

As the woman bled profusely, a friend of her brother, who was passing by, spotted her and took her to a hospital in an e-rickshaw. By the time she reached the hospital, she had lost a lot of blood.

Police sources said the victim had been trying to distance herself from the man who attacked her.

The victim's family members alleged that the police had not taken action when they had earlier complained about the man stalking her. Riya's brother Ashish Gautam said the police reached the spot 15-20 minutes after the attack.
