Woman's naked body found near lake in West Bengal's 24 Parganas; probe reveals rape, brutality before murder
Runa Laila Khan used to cross the lake everyday to reach her village in West Bengal’s Karimpur Hat area. But on Monday, when she failed to reach home, her panic-stricken husband started looking for her. His worst fears came true when he discovered her naked body near that very lake in the 24 Parganas district.
According to a Zee 24 Ghanta report, the initial police probe reveals that the 35-year-old was tortured and rape before the murder. The police has also discovered the victim’s jewelry and other belongings strewn near the pond.
While the case of rape and murder is being investigated, the police is also not ruling out the extra-marital affair angle.
The victim's body has been sent for autopsy at the Diamond Harbor District Hospital, said police.
The rape and murder of the housewife is a stark reminder of the grim women safety situation in India. According to an ADR India report, 3.38 lakh crime cases against women were reported out of which 11.5 percent were rape cases.
The ADR India also said that nearly 30 percent of all legislators have a criminal background, 1581 of sitting legislators have a criminal record, 51 have been involved in crime against women.
A BBC report said that more than 40% of the country's female victims were minor children.
This is not end of it. A 2017 report by Global Peace Index had claimed India to be the fourth most dangerous country for women travellers. Gender Vulnerability Index 2017 compiled by Ministry of Women and Child Development found Bihar, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand to be the bottom four in terms of safety. The data highlight the urgent need to ensure proper law and order situation in the country.
