To combat the increasing numbers of crimes against women in Jammu and Kashmir, the state police is readying two exclusive new battalions of women cops at a cost of Rs 235.86 crore. The move comes following a meeting of the state administrative council (SAC), which met in Jammu under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik.

The council accorded sanction for raising two women battalions of Jammu and Kashmir Police along with the creation of 2014 posts of various ranks. These posts include two posts of commandants, six deputy commandants, 14 deputy superintendents, 14 inspectors, 46 assistant sub-inspectors, 320 head constables, 1,402 constables, 138 followers, two medical officers, four medical assistants and two nursing assistants.

"The two battalions will be raised exclusively for women on the lines of the Border Battalions. The move is aimed at equipping the Jammu and Kashmir Police to effectively deal with crimes against women and give due representation to women in the police force," an official spokesperson said.

Around 3,168 cases of crimes against women were registered in 2017 in the state, resulting in 3,957 arrests. In 2016, around 2,915 cases were registered, in which 3,736 people were arrested.

"Due to inadequate representation/availability of women police personnel at various levels and to address the issues of gender-based violence faced by women, the state government had taken up the issue of raising of women's police battalions with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)," said the spokesman.

Recruitment to these two battalions will be completed within a year from the date of sanction. Raising of a woman's battalion will involve financial implications to the tune of Rs 235.86 crore, of which Rs 105.11 crore will be provided by Centre and Rs 129.94 crore will be state's share.
