When the Indian Army was busy battling Jaish-e-Mohammad suicide attackers at Sunjuwan in Jammu, the Pakistan army resorted to heavy shelling on Indian forward positions and civilian areas along the Line of Control, killing a woman at Pukherni of Rajouri district.

"Violation of ceasefire in Pukherni-Lairan area. Parveen Akhter of Lairan died due to bullet injury. Sub-divisional magistrate, additional superintendent of police handling situation", tweeted Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, district development commissioner (Rajouri).

The unprovoked attack was carried out on Saturday night, with the Pakistan army firing raining bullets and mortars on the Indian side near the Line of Control in Rajouri district.

The shelling expanded to newer areas on Sunday, targeting both army posts and civilian pockets in the district. "Heavy mortar shelling since morning in village Naika Panjgrain, Khorinar, Rajdhani. No damage has been reported so far," said Dr Choudhary

The firing went on intermittently through the day. "Just another normal shelling day. Our people live so close to death", said the development commissioner.

The fresh ceasefire violation comes two days after a 45-year-old woman, Zainab Bi, was killed and three Army personnel were injured when the Pakistan army fired indiscriminately in the Mankote sector of Poonch district.

Nearly a week ago, troopers from the neighbouring country killed four Indian soldiers, including a Captain, and injured another after they fired anti-tank missiles on Indian posts in Rajouri.

More than 20 people have been killed in Pakistani shelling near LoC and the international border across Jammu since January 17. While over 60 have suffered injuries, nearly half a lakh people have fled their homes in Jammu division.
