A senior citizen was arrested earlier this week for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman and keeping her captive for four days in the border district of Poonch in Jammu & Kashmir.

The girl had gone to visit a local shrine on May 24, but did not return home. Her parents lodged a report at the local police station after which officials swung into action. Four days later, a tip-off led the police to a house that was bolted from the outside. The police stormed into the house and nabbed the man, who tried to flee from the scene.

The police said the accused had abducted the girl and locked her in a rented room where he repeatedly raped her for more than four days.

"We have recovered the girl and arrested the accused. The accused is about 60 years of age who has been working in Mendhar area," said Shamsheer Hussian, Superintendent of Police, Poonch told dna. "The woman was taken for a medical check up. We have registered a case of rape."

Militancy-torn Jammu and Kashmir is notorious for crimes against women. Official data presented in the Legislative Assembly shows that 5,125 cases of rape and 14,953 cases of molestation were registered in the state from 1989 to 2013.

The police said that a charge sheet will soon be filed in the court. "We are waiting for the girl to give a formal statement before the court," said a police officer.
