The Shiv Sena on Monday mocked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for targeting to win 43 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the upcoming general elections.

"Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis deserves a lot of praise for his confidence. In the presence of BJP president Amit Shah in Pune, Fadnavis has said the party will win 43 seats in the upcoming elections. Fadnavis claims that BJP will defeat NCP supremo Sharad Pawar in Baramati," Sena mouthpiece Saamana said in an editorial on Monday.

It added: "The truth is that they can win all 48 seats in Maharashtra. Why only this, they can win 548 seats in the country. With EVM and this bubble-like-confidence, the lotus (BJP's election symbol) can even bloom in London and Ameria."

It is worth noting that the country has only 545 Lok Sabha seats, including the two seats for nominated members of the Anglo-Indian community.

The editorial asked why the "Ram Temple's lotus could not bloom in Ayodhya", in reference to the construction of the temple at the disputed site.

The Sena article was the reference to a BJP workers event in Pune on Saturday where Shah set a target of winning 45 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra.

Shah told party workers that Baramati, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar's bastion, should be one of the 45 seats.

However, state BJP chief Raosaheb Danve in his speech expressed confidence that they would win 43 seats, one more than in 2014.

Fadnavis seconded Danve and said the 43rd seat would be Baramati.

He added that the BJP was ready to fight elections alone. "We are ready to fight on all 48 seats with full strength... the 43rd seat Danve talks about is Baramati," he said.

Last time Rashtriya Samaj Paksha leader Mahadev Jankar, an NDA ally, lost from Baramati by a small margin, he said, adding, "Had there been the lotus symbol, we would have won Baramati. This time we will not make that mistake. Our candidate will fight on the party symbol."
