With just a month to go before monsoon ends, rainfall has been 3 per cent below normal for the country as a whole, and many parts of southern India and Maharashtra are reeling under deficit. Out of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, 24 have received normal rainfall, seven have recorded excess rain and five have received deficient rainfall. As per IMD's pre-monsoon forecast, rainfall between June and September is going to be 98 per cent of the long-period average with a (+/-) four per cent margin of error.

Across regions, the south Peninsula is facing the highest deficit of seven per cent. A closer look at the district level rainfall reveals that 13 out of Karnataka's 30 districts are facing a deficit while 10 of the 36 districts in Maharashtra are in the red. In Kerala, seven of its 14 districts are facing a shortfall. Rainfall in the western and northwestern parts, including Rajasthan, however, have been bountiful.

"Monsoon's distribution is not uniform, but overall the season has been good. Most of the weather systems that formed over the Bay of Bengal moved westwards and that resulted in above average rainfall in Gujarat and Rajasthan," said M Mohapatra, director general, National Weather Forecasting Centre.

Mohapatra added, "With most of the rain bearing systems moving towards Gujarat anf Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, and even Punjab have not received good rainfall." According to IMD data, Delhi has recorded an overall deficit of 32mm and in Haryana the overall deficit is 27mm.

IMD scientists said that while the usual withdrawal date of monsoon is September 1, withdrawal will not be announced for at least 5-6 days more based on prevailing conditions. IMD's extended weather outlook said the south peninsula, parts of eastern coastal states, and northeastern states are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall. Even in Central, Northwest India and northern plains, rainfall activity is expected in the coming days.
