In a case of witch hunting, a 47-year-old woman was beaten to death at her residence in Aundhe village in Khed tehsil of Pune district on Thursday. The woman's husband who tried to save her life was also killed.

Lilabai Navasu Mukane (47) and her husband Navasu Kunaji Mukane (55) were residing in small village of Aundhe, nearly 50 kilometers from Pune city. The incident took place on festival day of Diwali Padwa on Thursday. Khed police have arrested two persons from nearby village in connection with the murder who have been identified as Jaitu Borkar and Baban Mukane. The arrests were made from Koyande village which is adjoining village of Aundhe.

According to police, deceased Lilabai was a quack and villagers from nearby village also suspected that she knew some black magic tricks.   Inspector Arvind Chaudhari, in charge of Khed police station told DNA, "The arrested person Borkar's daughter had developed a cyst in her stomach and he suspected that Lilabai did some black magic on his daughter. Similarly, Baban's wife had got some rashes on her body and he also suspected that it was because of Lilabai. They also had argument with her on this issue in the past."

However, according to police, nobody had thought that the argument will lead to killing of Lilabai and her husband. Chaudhari said,  "On the day of Padwa, Borkar and Mukane had gone for hunting and on their way to forest, they spotted Lilabai's house. Due to their suspicion that she does black magic, they decided to kill her."

"They entered her house and started beating her with sticks. When her husband tried to save her, the duo attacked him with sharp weapons and they left the house only after ensuring that the couple was dead," he added. After couple's neighbours spotted bodies of two, they informed police about the incident. "After our team reached the spot, they detained eight to nine people for questioning. Meanwhile, Lilabai's daughter told us that she had argument with Borkar in the past and on that basis we interrogated Borkar who confessed of killing the couple with the help of Mukane," Chaudhari said.
