In a close shave for passengers , the wing of an IndiGo Airline plane collided with that of a Kuwait Airways at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) on Wednesday early morning. Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the airport operator have independently launched an investigation into the matter.

The incident was brought to the notice of the IndiGo pilot by a passenger as a result of which the further damage could be avoided. A Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) official confirmed the incident but refused to comment further.

An IndiGo Airline spokesperson said that at approximately 5:45 am, while the aircraft of an international airline was taxiing toward the parking stand, at the same time an IndiGo flight was taxiing to depart to Jaipur from Taxi Way ‘N’ and ‘W' respectively.

"As 6E 207 (IndiGo)  flight from Mumbai to Jaipur was taxiing out for departure under the ATC’s instruction, IndiGo pilot was advised to follow the international operator arrival. Approximately at 5:45 am, the pilot of this international airline was advised by the ATC to move ahead to make way for IndiGo aircraft.  As per the AIP (India), while an aircraft is on taxiway N, Taxiway W4 must not be permitted to use as standard wing tip clearance is not met," the IndiGo spokesperson said

The AIP (India) guidelines manual reads -  the aircraft holding on taxiway W4 at holding position runway 14/32 will prohibit aircraft taxing on taxiway N.  Due to the taxiing process, the Airbus 320 aircraft of IndiGo came in contact with Airbus A330 aircraft of the international operator.

The airline officials said that as the wing tip of the two aircraft came in contact, an IndiGo passenger observed this and immediately alerted the crew who informed the pilots. The IndiGo pilot  immediately decided to take the precautionary measure and returned the aircraft to the parking bay. The flight crew ensured to keep all passengers informed about the situation and maintained calm on board. "All passengers were safely accommodated to the other aircraft" the spokesperson added.

Kuwait airways officials could not be immediately contacted for comments.
