Military manners taught by his colonel father didn't help Kislay Thakur (35) enter the military academy but in jail instead.

A graduate from Wilson College, Mumbai, Kislay duped several women posing as potential groom from army background through various matrimonial websites.

He used his sartorial and culinary army habits, learned from his father, as bait to impress his victims. Kislay posed as a major serving in the military intelligence unit in Ladakh. However, his joyride ended on Tuesday when the Delhi Police arrested him from Gurgaon on the complaint of a Janakpuri resident, Syed Rizwan Ahmed, the brother of one of his victims.

Rizwan contacted Kislay in May after seeing his profile on shaadi.com to marry his sister. Kislay had presented himself as major Ashiq Bashir, a resident of Bangalore.

"After initial talks over phone, Kislay convinced Rizwan that he will marry his sister. He also convinced the family to give Rs6 lakh in advance to buy an adventure series Renault Duster as a marriage gift. Rizwan transferred the amount in two instalments. Kislay had told Rizwan that he would get a 50% discount if he bought the vehicle from army quota," said Ranvir Singh, deputy commissioner of police.

After Kislay received the money, he stopped answering Rizwan's calls. Rizwan got suspicious and inquired with Indian Army about the antecedents of Kislay. He found that there was no officer with the name Ashiq Bashir.

Rizwan lodged a complaint in Janakpuri police station after which the police raided many places. They arrested Kislay from Gurgaon on Tuesday morning. The money has been recovered and handed over to the complainant.

The police claimed that Kislay had duped many people in the same way but none came forward to complain. "We believe that after his arrest, more of his victims will come forward," said the Singh.

Kislay, who was born in Bihar, had completed his graduation from Mumbai's Wilson College, after which he worked as manager in various organisations, including GE Money.

His father, who's a retired colonel, runs a coaching institute in Amritsar, Punjab. Kislay had also taught at his father's coaching centre but soon got diverted in the quest for easy money.
