After constant questions regarding Uttar Pradesh's, India's most populous state, vaccination drive, the Centre commented on the same on Friday. The Centre was clarifying regarding media reports that claimed that it will take three years for Uttar Pradesh to fully vaccinate its population against COVID-19.

Issuing a clarification, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare called the news report 'misleading'. The ministry said that the report uses the average daily vaccination rate from the beginning of the vaccination drive to show a low rate which is not accurate.

The Health Ministry also said that using this average to calculate the efficiency of the drive is unfair as the availability of vaccines was extremely low at the time. The Centre also said that India has done a good job at making the vaccine available for the citizens and increasing the vaccination rate.

However, the ministry said to also keep in mind that Uttar Pradesh is India's largest state in terms of population. According to the 2011 census, UP's population stands at over 19 crores, higher than many counties including Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The Centre has said that despite the challenges UP has been showing improvement in its monthly vaccine coverage from 4.63 lakh in January to over 1.54 crore in July.

The Health Ministry said, "Adding to its high vaccination coverage, the state's 'cluster approach' for vaccination and creating special 'pink booths' to encourage women of the state to take a shot of the COVID-19 vaccine has shown positive results."

Uttar Pradesh has registered a vaccination coverage of 4.67 crores so far.
