Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu hit out at both the BJP and the Congress and instead stressed on an increased role of the regional parties in the 2019 General Assembly Elections. Other TDP members said that the party would not support either a Congress or a BJP prime minister at the helm.

Speaking on the first day of the TDP Mahanadu — the party's three-day annual congregation — party leader Kalava Srinivasulu said that there was no question of supporting either a BJP or Congress prime minister. "We have expressed our desire to support a united Third Front, but our wish is that after the 2019 election, it should not be headed by either a Congress or a BJP prime minister. Maybe some parties support the Third Front; but we will have to decide the prime minister first before we lend our support," he said.

Srinivasulu's comments came barely hours after the speech made by Naidu at the event, where he took potshots at both the national parties. While he blamed the Congress for the bifurcation of the state, he said that the BJP has betrayed him.

"The BJP has not yet fulfilled the 18 assurances of AP Reorganisation Act 2014. In the last two years, I have travelled 22 times to Delhi to speak to them, but there has not been any response. They have Rs 2,000 crore for a statue, but none to help build Amravati. In all, the state got only Rs 3,900 crore," he said.

Going on to predict a BJP defeat in 2019, Naidu spoke of the 1996 experiment. "I went to swearing in ceremony of Kumaraswamy. In 1996 we did an experiment, and formed an United Front government where I was a convener. We formed the only non-Congress, non-BJP government ever. This time, too, we will play a key role," he said.

While in Bengaluru, too, Naidu has stressed on the larger role of regional parties, and we as far as to suggest that leaders like Deve Gowda should be at the helm in case an United Front forms the government, so that the needs of regional parties are not ignored.

Srinivasulu, however, said that the party will have a key role in national politics and is open to post-poll alliances, he clarified that there is no question of forming one with the BJP. "We suffered a lot, no such idea will be entertained by the party," he said.
