Modifying its earlier order, the Supreme Court today said it is not mandatory to play the national anthem in cinema halls before the screening of movies.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said a 12-member inter-ministerial committee, set up by the Centre, would take a final call on the playing of the national anthem in the cinemas.
In its order dated November 30, 2016, the apex court had made playing of the anthem mandatory in cinema halls before the screening of a film.
As the verdict by the top court came in, Twitterati took to the social media platform to weigh in.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions:
National Anthem in theatres now not a must??

WTF! I always loved the National Anthem before a movie because in most cases it was better than the movie itself!
Will really miss the 'Oh ho' chorus in theatre when anthem starts playing

Now that the SC has ruled sensibly on the anthem can @airindiain stop forcing pilots to shout ‘Jai Hind’ at the end of announcements?

It is silly to say ‘We have some mechanical defect so we have to cancel this flight. Jai Hind!’
If they don't play the National anthem how will we spot the anti-nationals in the theatre?

Now you can walk into a theatre, find your seat and stay in it.

The Supreme Court has said there will be no more mandatory playing of the National Anthem before movies. Good.
Now to focus on what really matters: a rule about how food should not be served during the movies.
India debates over the national anthem being played in theaters while the Us debates over their president forgetting the words of the anthem. Interesting how two different countries are discussing the importance of the anthem at the same time! #PatrioticOrNot
