"I will do what exactly my mind tells me. I will not be swayed by disruptive criticism. I have a mind of my own and I will work as per that," said Amruta Fadnavis, spouse of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday, after she was trolled on social media for promoting a Christmas-themed charity event.

Trouble began when Amruta tweeted and posted photographs of a Christmas event organised by a FM radio station on December 12. She was assailed by an array of abusive posts, some of which questioned her faith before marriage.

Shefali Vaidya, a columnist with the right-wing website Swarajya and RSS-mouthpiece Tarun Bharat, tweeted, "As a private individual, you are free to do what you want. As the First Lady of Maharashtra, your actions will always be open to scrutiny and criticism."

When Amruta tweeted in reply, "Love, sharing & empathy have no religion – lets accept positivity around us & stay away from negative thoughts & demotivating energies", Vaidya amped the criticism with a caustic, "DO get your SM (Social Media) team to read all the replies to this tweet. Respect the will of the people who elected your husband rather than sounding like a writer of 'Chicken Soup For The Evangelical Soul'"

Amruta replied that she would continue to attend such charity events.

"The motive behind attending the function was to give Christmas gifts to poor children," she told this newspaper, "I was approached by this professional radio channel. During any festival, we have to do something good. We have to share happiness, whether it is Diwali, Janmashtami or any other festival."

She clarified that unlike her husband, she is not a political person. "I never mix politics with my personal interests," she said. "I never use his (Fadnavis') position as a tool for my work. I take my own personal decisions. They (the channel) may have called me as wife of the Chief Minister. However, as a human being, I try to bring happiness to others and hence I attended this program."

When asked whether she had discussed the incident with Fadnavis, Amruta said she had not yet done so.
