Senior Rajasthan BJP leader and Jaipur MLA Ghanshyam Tiwari on Monday resigned from the party to float his new political outfit. Tiwari, who had been relegated to the sidelines over the last four-and-half years, criticised the Vasundhara Raje government and called it a betrayal of people’s faith.

In his resignation letter to BJP national president Amit Shah, timed with the 43rd anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India, Tiwari alleged that there was an “undeclared emergency in state and the country”.

Tiwari had been with the party since the early days of Jana Sangh.

In his exit from the BJP, Tiwari has walked down the path taken by his former party colleagues Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha who are critical of the functioning of the BJP governments at the Centre and in the states. While Yashwant Sinha has officially announced his exit from the BJP, Shatrughan Sinha is still a party MP.

At a press conference in Jaipur, Tiwari announced that his newly floated party will contest all 200 assembly seats in the upcoming polls later this year.

“I will now contest the Assembly elections from Sanganer constituency (in Jaipur) as a candidate of my newly formed political party, Bharat Vahini Party (BVP),” the 71-year-old leader said.

Tiwari was elected as the BJP legislator from the same constituency in 2013. “I will be the first MLA of BVP,” he told media persons.

Tiwari indicated he was open to alliances with people who wished to work for the betterment of the state. He gave ample indications of a possible alliance with firebrand Jat leader Hanuman Beniwal, who like him had walked out of the party in last elections.

Beniwal is an independent MLA from Khimsar, Nagaur.

“I am open to the thought of creating a Third Front in collaboration with like-minded leaders,” he said.

The veteran leader said he will talk to Beniwal.

In his resignation addressed to Amit Shah, Tiwari has accused the state and the national unit of BJP of sidelining him.

In his four-page resignation letter, he alleged that both the state and central leadership have kneeled down before Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

“I fought in 1975 against the declared emergency. Now, I will fight against undeclared emergency. There is an undeclared emergency in the country and the state. I am ready to fight for the protection of public and safeguarding their independence,” wrote Tiwari in his resignation letter.

While addressing Shah, the senior leader pointed out that his repeated complaints over the last four years on corruption and misrule in Rajasthan did not find an audience.

“I even attempted to tell that an individual has taken control of BJP in the state. But you did nothing. Instead, you tried to harass and defame the loyal workers of the party. It is now clear that first you agreed to side with corruption in Rajasthan and now, you have kneeled before it,” Tiwari said.
