Union Minister Ram Kripal Yadav on Tuesday reacted to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) President Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti's "hand-chopping" remarks saying Bharti is like a daughter to him and even his chopped hands would bless her.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Pataliputra said such statements were sad for a democracy. "People who have faith in a democracy cannot make such remarks. In a democracy, in politics, anyone can oppose any party or person, but such words do not have any place in democracy. A person who considers himself a servant (of the people) cannot speak such things, only a ruler can," Yadav said in Patna.

Yadav added, "Bharti has been a niece to me, who is like a daughter and my blessings and good wishes have always been with her. If she feels she will get satisfaction by cutting off my hands, then I am ready even for that. My hands have always kept blessing her and even my chopped hands will continue to do the same."

The minister said he comes from a poor family and whatever he has done is with the spirit of service. "I will continue to do so. Till I am in public life, my hands and my body will be for the service of the people," he said.

On January 16, Bharti had triggered a controversy when she said she felt like chopping Yadav's hands. Yadav is a former RJD leader, who defeated her in the Patliputra Lok Sabha constituency during 2014 polls.

A video clip of Bharti went viral, wherein she was heard telling party workers and supporters, "I am warning you against that person (Yadav). I used to respect him a lot but that respect went away on the day he was sitting next to Sushil Modi (deputy CM of Bihar) with Modi's book (on Lalu and the alleged scams) in his hands. I felt like cutting off his hands with the same axe with which he used to cut chaff."

The BJP had demanded an apology from Bharti for the comments. Yadav was a close aide of Lalu but had a fallout with the RJD over the Patliputra LS seat ahead of the 2014 general election.
