Union Road Transport and Highways and Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari has indicated that water flowing to Pakistan will be used to nurture river Yamuna. While speaking at an event, Nitin Gadkari said that many big ticket projects have been started for cleaning up and rejuvenation of river Yamuna. Now, the government is also looking to use water flowing to Pakistan from the three rivers to nurture Yamuna. This is latest in steps the government has taken or is mulling to corner Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack, which lead to the death of 40 CRPF jawans.

Nitin Gadkari said," We have started the work of cleansing up of Yamuna. As water resource minister, I can tell you, the three rivers whose water goes to Pakistan, now projects will be started there to divert the water to Yamuna".

As per the Indus Water Treaty, water of Ravi, Beas, Sutlej go to Pakistan. India has already speed up several hydrel power projects so that the country doesn't provide more water to Pakistan than that is mandated by the treaty. Gadkari's decision is only likely to increase the pace of such projects. Already India has revoked the Most Favoured Nation tag from Pakistan and has slapped a 200% duty on all goods exported to the country.
