As soon as the BJP government came out with its Budget proposals for FY 2017-18, the Opposition unleashed a scathing attack on it for not coming out with details on demonetization, touted as the biggest move to end corruption and usher in transparency.

The Opposition also took potshots at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for presenting a 'second- hand' Budget as most of the proposals were announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on December 31.

The Congress said the Union Budget has failed to lay down a roadmap for job creation and mitigation of the ill-effects of demonetization. It said the Budget was based on wrong statistical data and presumptions.

"The government has not said a word on how much demonetized currency has come back in the RBI coffers and how much black money it has unearthed. It is fearful of talking of demonetization now as it has resulted in job loss in crores in informal sector and the projections for economy are very bleak. But the government is fudging data and portraying wrong picture that will come back to haunt it,"said Congress spokesperson, Anand Sharma.

Some Congress leaders, however, took solace in the fact that there were no big sops that could have altered the political discourse in the forthcoming Assembly polls in five states. "The projections and estimates lack credibility as the data is doubtful and that too relates to just first six months of the financial year. My assessment that the growth of the GDP will be not more than 4.6 per cent as per the methodology that our government used used to employ. Even the Economic Survey is flawed and gives wrong figures and I say it with full conviction," said Sharma.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, whose party boycotted the first two days of the Budget session to protest against demonetization, claimed the Budget has no roadmap and is full of hollow words.

"A controversial #Budget2017 which is clueless, useless, baseless, missionless and actionless. Heartless No roadmap for the country or the future from a government that has lost all its credibility," Banerjee said in a tweet.

Left parties have termed the Budget as "contractionary" and a "complete gimmick", alleging that the figures given by the Finance Minister do not match the reality.

"It an example of Finance Minister joining the Prime Minister and the BJP President to create 'jumlas' (rhetorical phrases)," Yechury said.

Biju Janata Dal leader Bhartruhari Mahtab wondered from where the revenue would come for the government when the manufacturing growth is coming down.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi described the Budget as lacking a clear vision.

"We were expecting fireworks, instead it was a damp squib. It is just 'sher-o-shayari'. There is nothing for farmers and youth and nothing for job creation. There is no clear vision, no idea," said Rahul.

"They have promised certain things keeping polls in five states in mind. They have not said anything for farmers, youth, women," said Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge.
