A Trinamool councillor has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court objecting against the Central government providing for ‘Y-plus’ security to former TMC leader Mukul Roy after his defection to BJP.

Earlier the state government had written to the Union Home ministry about it but the Centre never replied to it. Following which councillor of Bidhannagar Municipality and leader of the party’s youth wing Debraj Chakraborty had filed the PIL.

After quitting Trianmool Congress and stepping down from his membership to the Rajya Sabha, Roy had joined the BJP on November 3.

Chakraborty, in his plea had stated that after he joined BJP there had been no incident which threatened the life of Roy and thus he wanted to know why was there a need to provide security by the Centre.

Earlier in its letter to the Centre, the state government had said that law and order was a state subject and who in the state would get what kind of security, would be decided by the state as well. State also alleged that the Centre, bypassing the state had provided security to a particular individual which was not good for the state-Centre relationship.

Although the Centre had not replied to this letter of the state, officials said that the Centre was responsible for upholding the constitution which guarantees private security. Rajya Sabha MPs George Baker and Roopa Ganguly had not got any security from the state even after asking for it so the state had to arrange for it.

After Roy’s defection senior TMC leaders had spoken in public about their lack of confidence on his son Subhrangshu Roy who is still a TMC MLA from Bijpur in North 24 Parganas district after which Subhrangshu had said that he had a feeling of insecurity. He had also written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee complaining about the deteriorating law and order situation in his constituency.

Referring to Mukul and his son Subhrangshu, state food supplies minister and TMC North 24 Parganas district president Jyotipriyo Mullick had said, “It is a game of hide and seek which will not go on for too long. We will soon come to know about the truth in the relationship between the father and son. We are not fools.”
