It's a wired world, indeed! Ask Sion-based engineer Sanjay Nair and Wadala resident Shirin Khan. Both are at the forefront of an emerging trend – monitoring parents.

These are parents who install CCTVs at home to keep a watch on their babies. Despite hiring a nanny to care of the baby, working mothers feel secure when they install cameras at home.

"We have a two-year-old daughter and both my wife and me are working. Our parents do not stay with us, and, therefore, we have to rely on a maid," says Nair.

It's news of children being beaten up by maids that made them turn to technology. "When we have the technology, why not use it? The CCTVs are connected to our mobile phones. While at work, we take turns to keep a tab on our child who is at home with the maid."

Khan says that by installing CCTV cameras at home, she can monitor if the maid is taking proper care of her one-and-a-half-year-old son. "After installing the CCTV, I am at peace. I keep a track of the maid's every move. Even she is aware of the cameras. It is better than keeping our son in a creche," said Khan.

Nadeem Shaikh, senior technical engineer with SMB Computers in Kurla, says this is a trend that is catching on. "We get one or two requests for CCTV cameras at home every day."

Many non-resident Indians (NRIs), especially those who have old parents, too, are joining the bandwagon. "My parents live alone and we have two maids taking care of them. It becomes important for me to monitor who is coming home and what is happening there in terms of security. It also helps me stay in touch with them every second," said Siddharth Sen, who lives in the USA and has has parents in Bandra.
