Whodunit: The mystery behind suspended Twitter accounts

Users say Twitter has not given them a satisfactory reason for suspending the accounts

A few months ago, a blog shared by an account called attomeybharti highlighted how Twitter had suspended accounts of users who had trolled Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Similar cases have been reported of Twitter suspending accounts of BJP, Congress and AAP supporters. While the accounts are restored a few days later, Twitter has failed to give individuals a satisfactory reason as to why these accounts were taken down.

Recently, the Twitter account of Delhi resident Rana Safvi, who also manages the handle @Hazrat-e-Dilli, was suspended. While speaking to DNA, Safvi said that she had been on Twitter since 2009 and managed three other handles, along with her official handle. “I tweet on heritage and history ad have never tweeted anything abusive or hateful ever,” she said.

Safvi received a lot of support on Twitter after her account was suspended

This week, Safvi was busy curating content for a handle called @MuslimVoicesIN – a site that is curated weekly on a rotation basis, and shows the moderate face of Islam. “Last week, the handle was suspended, as was its then curator Masarat Daud,” she said.

Daud while speaking to DNA added that when her account was suspended, she received an auto message from Twitter that said her account was suspended because she had multiple accounts – something Daud denies. “Twitter India has been silent. So is this a tech glitch or targeted harassment, only they can tell. But it is very strange that no other weekly curation account has experienced this,” she added.

Daud even wrote a piece expressing her disgust at the suspension of her account. “Twitter needs to step in and sort its s**** out. How is it possible that any random person can bring anyone’s account down? With their shares falling and a public discussion on its uncertain future, these are challenges Twitter needs to address if it wants to stay relevant. That I have to wait for two days to hear back on my appeal while the nut-jobs bring accounts down in minutes, is nothing short of a digital absurd theatre,” she wrote.
