Assam's former Director General of Police Shankar Baruah allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday.

Baruah, a 1974 batch IPS officer, had served as Assam's DGP from July 2009 till January 2012.

Baruah was under the CBI's radar with respect to the Saradha scam. On August 28, CBI had searched the premises of Baruah and 11 others who included Congress leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assamese singer Sadananda Gogoi and former minister and Congress legislator Anjan Dutta. They also conducted searches at the premises of a private television news channel NewsLive – headed by Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

Baruah was said to be in depression after the search and was reportedly admitted twice in the hospital.

The CBI team had also taken him to the SBI branch in Guwahati and examined his bank account in his presence.

He was allegedly a close associate of Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It was also alleged that he provided security to Saradha Group chief Sudipta Sen in his personal capacity and demanded protection money from the company.

Baruah's involvement in the chit fund scam has not been proven.
