The Indian Navy on Thursday inducted Shubhangi Swaroop as the first woman pilot into its ranks. Along with Swaroop, three other women - Astha Segal, Roopa A and Sakthi Maya S – also created history by becoming the country’s first women officers at the Naval Armament Inspectorate (NAI) branch of the Navy.

All four passed out of the Ezhimala Naval Academy at a glittering function in Kannur  on Wednesday, attended by Naval chief Admiral Sunil Lanba.

Here are five things to know about Indian Navy’s first woman pilot Shubhangi Swaroop: 

1-    Shubhangi Swaroop hails from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

2-    Shubhangi will be trained at the Dundigal Air Force Academyat Hyderabad which trains pilots of the Army, Navy and the Air Force.

3-     She will soon be flying Navy’s Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft.

4-    Her father Gyan Swaroop is a serving Naval officer.

5-    “I know, this is not just an exciting opportunity but a great responsibility also,” she said after her induction as the Indian Navy pilot. 

Earlier in October this year, the Indian Air Force inducted Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh as pilots after their strenuous training.
