In an unfortunate incident that happened in the National Zoological Park of Delhi, a young man of about 22 years was attacked and killed by a white tiger on Tuesday afternoon. The identity of the man has been confirmed as Maqsood, a resident  from Anand Parbat, New Delhi .

Stating that the guard of the zoo sounded an alarm and gathered the supervisors and staff to save, park's director Amitabh Agnihotri said, " "Maksood, a resident  from Anand Parbat, New Delhi crossed the stand-off barrier of the white tiger enclosure in beat no 8 and jumped into it. The staff members tried to divert the attention of the tiger but the visitor was mauled on the spot."

He added that the body was being sent for a post-mortem examination.Authorities have yet to ascertain whether the student was alone or accompanied by friends.

According to eye witnesses the security at the zoo was weak and very few people was present to help the victim. "The barricade was too low and it seems the tiger grabbed the youth into his cage and firmly latched on to the youth's neck," an eyewitness who alerted the police told an Indian news channel.

However, the zoo authority claims that all the enclosures of the zoo are absolutely safe and no visitor can reach the moat wall without crossing the stand-off barrier. They maintain that the visitor crossed the barricade and went into the tiger's enclosure.

The white Bengal tiger is called Vijay and is about 5 year old.

"We tried to throw sticks and stones at the tiger but we could not save the youth," he said, adding that the tiger killed him in less than 10 minutes.

More details awaited.

In 2000 a tiger mauled a man in a zoo in the eastern state of West Bengal.

In 2011, India had 1,706 tigers, or more than half the world's population of the endangered species.
