As much as we would like to believe that India is a place that is tolerant and progressive, the attitude towards backward castes has been termed as shameful. There are several cases of kangaroo courts calling the shots on the fate of individuals from lower castes, even if they share the same space with the so-called upper caste. So when former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju shared a post on Facebook on inter-caste marriages, it garnered a lot of support.

Katju is not one to be politically correct about anything. The former SC judge and press council chairman has been known for his ‘honest’ Facebook posts, where he has addressed topic ranging from the political situation in the country to hyper-local issues. Recently, Katju also showed his softer side by revealing how he advised a girl who had contacted him for relationship advice.

That’s right: Katju became cupid.

Recalling the incident, Katju said that a Dalit girl had contacted him in 2014. “The girl, an MTech student in Delhi, was friendly with an upper caste boy for seven years. She told me that the boy’s parents refused to give their consent to marriage, as she was a Dalit,” he wrote.

The girl then asked Katju for advice, to which he told her to tell the boy to choose between her and his family, as it wasn’t fair to keep hanging on forever.

On Thursday, Katju received a Facebook message from the girl, who shared that she had finally married the boy. “My in-laws have fully accepted me and treat me as their own daughter,” she said.

Katju congratulated the girl and lauded the boy for standing up for her. “I wish all Indians become like you two, free of casteism. May I publish your story on my Facebook page? It will be an inspiration to others,” he wrote.

“I am very happy for this young couple, and recommend all upper caste boys and girls to marry persons of another caste or religion if they love them. Don’t listen to your parents or other relatives and caste/community members if they object. Their heads are full of feudal, casteist and communal c***. Rebel against them, even if you face difficulties. Our country must destroy the curse of casteism and communalism if it is to progress,” he wrote.

Katju’s post has been shared over 500 times on Facebook since he shared it on Thursday.
