Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a lifelong bachelor, a fact that entire India knows quite well. But what many of us don’t know is to what great extent Atal ji had gone to evade a marriage proposal.

The story dates back to 1940s, when young Vajpayee was studying at the DAV College in Kanpur. One day, he got the news that his parent were looking for a marriage prospect for him. The very news made Vajpayee so nervous that he ran to his friend’s house and locked himself up for three days.

According to a Times of India report, Vajpayee remained locked inside the house of his friend Gorey Lal Tripathi, when he got to know about his parents’ intention of marrying him. Tripathi’s son Prakash said that his father and Vajpayee were in the RSS where they became friends.

'Atalji had asked my father to lock the room from outside. He would knock at the door from inside when he needed water or food or to go to toilet,' Prakash was quoted as saying by the TOI.

When Tripathi asked Vajpayee why he was so reluctant in getting married, Vajpayee said that he wanted to work for the nation and marriage could become a hurdle. A TV report also quoted former Prime Minister’s relative who said that when Vajpayee’s mother asked him why he was not interested in marriage, he reportedly said that ‘what’s the point? If I get married and leave her (wife) here, she would complain. I can’t work like that.’

A master orator, who knew 11 languages, Vajpayee breathed his last on August 16, 2018 at 5:05 pm at the AIIMS in the national capital. The three-time Prime Minister, who won the highest civilian honour - Bharat Ratna, was cremated with full state honours at Smriti Sthal on Friday.
