November 12, 2015, will see the release of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, a film made by Sooraj Barjatya starring Salman Khan as Prem. But there were other events that occurred in this year that made a difference.

Safdar Hashmi’s death

Safdar Hashmi is best known for his work with street theatre.  A playwright and theatre director, he founded the Jana Natya Manch (JANAM). He murdered on January 1 when performing a street play Halla Bol at Jhandapur, Sahibabad. on January 1.Congress member Mukesh Sharma was among the 10 convicted for the murder.  His death shocked and angered the entire cultural world who launched a nation-wide protest.

Union Carbide’s pays compensation

On December 23, 1984, the world saw what is considered the worst industrial disaster at Bhopal. Toxic methyl isocyanate gas released from Union Carbide India Ltd’s (UCIL) pesticide plant in the city killed about 15,000 people and injured at least five lakh others. The effects of the gas continue to be seen in the current generation. In 1989, Union Carbide struck an out-of-court deal with the Indian government and agreed to pay $470 million in compensation. The victims have been waging legal battles demanding more compensation, better treatment facilities and removal of hazardous waste from the site, and jobs for affected people.

Agni-I test firing

1989 saw the successful test of Agni-I, a medium-range ballistic missile developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India. It was built as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program at the Interim Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. This fire of the single-stage missile, developed in the wake of the Kargil War, placed India in the exclusive club of world’s technological and military giants.

Sachin Tendulkar’s international debut

One of cricket’s most revered figures, Sachin Tendulkar made his debut in international cricket on November 15. All of sixteen years old, he played his first Test match against Pakistan in Karachi and made 15 runs. In his autobiography, Playing It My Way, Tendulkar recalled the terror of facing the likes of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis right in his first Test innings. “It was baptism by fire. So much so that after my very first innings in Test cricket, during which I was all at sea against Wasim and Waqar, I began to doubt my ability to bat and question whether I was ever going to be good enough to play at international level,” Tendulkar wrote in the book.

Rubaiya Sayeed’s abduction

On December 8, Rubaiya Sayeed, was kidnapped by members of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), a Kashmiri militant organisation. Rubaiya Sayeed was the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the then Home Minister of India in the VP Singh government. JKLF demanded the release of five of its jailed colleagues in exchange for Rubaiya’s release. The government acceded to their demands. The abduction was seen as a turning point in Kashmir insurgency.
