The opposition Congress and NCP may be attacking the BJP-Shiv Sena-led state government over the agrarian crisis and the demand for a farm loan write-offs, but this has not prevented their senior leaders from going on a foreign junket.

Legislative Council Chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, who belongs to the NCP, and senior Congress leader Manikrao Thakre, who is the Deputy Chairman of the state Legislative Council, are part of a 16-member delegation that will visit Australia, New Zealand and Singapore on a 14-day study tour. Ministers Pandurang Phundkar and Girish Bapat will also participate in the tour, organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), along with four members of the Upper House.

The opposition Congress, NCP, Samajwadi Party and Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) had launched a 'Sangharsh Yatra' seeking farm loan waivers and ameliorative measures for agriculture. The tour comes at a time when farmers are protesting across the state due to delays in procuring the bumper crop of tur dal.

However, NCP leader Dhananjay Munde said, "The presence of the council Chairman and Deputy Chairman is mandatory for the CPA events. They must sign the MoUs that will be inked there." Munde said, adding that he had chosen to stay away from the study tour due to the crisis in the state.
