What Bhaiyyaji Joshi's election means to RSS and Narendra Modi

By re-electing the 67-year-old Bhaiyyaji Joshi for the third time as Sarkaryvaha (general secretary), the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) message is loud and clear: it does not want to lose the momentum created since Bhaiyyaji-led RSS powered the BJP to astounding victory at the Centre last year and the subsequent state elections.

Bhaiyyaji, known for seva karya, would be focussing on further development of the organisation through creating infrastructure, mainly educational, in the north-east; but his anointment is aimed more at improving BJP-RSS coordination, so that party and the RSS penetrate into otherwise unconquered territories.

Bhaiyyaji's deputy Dattatreya Hosbale was speculated to replace Bhaiyyaji, but RSS did not want to risk lose its hold on BJP. Hosbale, comparatively junior to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, would have given an opportunity to Shah-Modi duo to follow late Pramod Mahajan, who at times ignored the Sangh diktats during Vajpayee-led NDA rule. Hosbale's statement just ahead of Pratinidhi Sabha meet on Saturday tells its amply: "Generals are not changed in the midst of a winning battle."

The message is loud and clear that RSS wants to maintain its grip on government and does not want to create any problem with any change. Many do not know that even though RSS has Sarsanghchalak in Mohan Bhagwat, it is Bhaiyyaji Joshi, the general secretary who was given the responsibility to keep an eye on political developments. It was Bhaiyyaji who was instrumental in nationwide participation of RSS when the brand Modi was popularised across the country.

Known for his contribution in seva karya (social service of RSS) in vanvasi (tribal) areas Bhaiyyaji is a great planner and executor, which he demonstrated during the rise and popularisation of brand Modi as well as during Lok Sabha elections, which saw BJP coming to power on its own. Joshi in last four years has been instrumental in taking the number of regular shakhas or daily meetings from 28,000 in 2012 to over 33,000 in 2015.
