The Gujjar agitation in Western Railway's Kota division, smack in the middle of the money-spinning Mumbai-Delhi route, has begun bleeding the railways. Conservative estimates of losses rising out of cancellations of passenger and freight trains is hovering around the Rs10 crore per day in Western Railway (WR) section alone, officials said.

Ever since the agitation started about a week ago, WR has been forced to cancel 15-20 trains every day on the route. With almost 40 freight trains on the route every day, mostly carrying export-import containers from JNPT and Mumbai Port Trust, the losses on the freight front are considerable. According to the railways, some 18% of all railway freight traffic in the country passes through the Mumbai-Delhi route.

"Losses for a train like Rajdhani every day is around Rs25-30 lakh. For other trains, the loss, in case they don't run, is Rs10-15 lakh. A back of the envelope figure of losses we are looking at from passenger operations is Rs3 crore per day. Freight losses are a little more complicated to compute because in most cases the goods will reach late. But yes, the extra fuel bills of the trains that are diverted on much longer routes will burn a hole in railways' pockets," said a top-ranking WR official.

Apart from the losses, it has also congested most other routes in the western and central zones of the railways as many trains are being diverted. "These diversions delay other trains as well, which, in turn, means consumption of more diesel and more electricity, besides causing massive inconvenience to people. If we calculate the man-hours lost, it runs into hundreds of crores," agreed another official.
